Parking Woes and November Luncheon Details

On the second Wednesday of each month, Hoosier PRSA puts on a monthly luncheon. There is a ton of work that happens behind the scenes to make this possible.

Lately, there has been a lot of feedback about parking at the Hilton, our host location since February 2009. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused. We can assure you that we’re working on this issue and welcome your continued feedback to help improve our programs.

At our next luncheon on November 11, we expect to have a large turnout for two reasons. First, this is the same day as our annual Half Day with a Pro program. We anticipate many of the participating students will join us for the luncheon too.

The other reason is the program topic. Our chapter’s “Meet the Media” program has proven to be a popular and well-attended event. We’ll be moving this edition from the morning to the luncheon slot.

During this installment of “Meet the Media,” we’ll hear from The Indianapolis Star. Panelists will include senior editors Jenny Green and Steve Berta, along with Cathy Kightlinger, “Talk of Our Town” columnist.

Attendees will get the full scoop on recent revisions to staff, sections, reporting policies, editorial boards and overall content. In addition, we’ll learn about how the Star is now approaching online coverage, including video.

Ethical Public Relations - Join us on 090909

I recently attended a bloggers conference in which one individual asked the presenter, "If PR isn't about spin, then what is it?"

That question could open up a whole can of worms, but what it implies is that PR professionals lack ethical standards. As a member of PRSA and a board member of the Hoosier Chapter, I pointed out to this individual, and the rest of the audience, that we have a code of ethics that the Society takes very seriously.

Unfortunately, there are some practitioners out there there giving PR a bad name because of their flawed ethical standards (or lack thereof). Perhaps you've been following the debacle around Sigg and whether its older-model water bottles contain BPA, or maybe you've heard about the PR agency that was having its interns post positive reviews of client apps on Apple's App Store. There was also a kerfuffle recently about a small PR firm's handling of accidentally CC-ing a pitch to several bloggers, journalists and industry leaders--the firm's reputation was shattered in minutes. 

With these thoughts in mind, you are invited to attended the Hoosier Chapter's monthly luncheon meeting on September 9 (090909). The luncheon will star some of our own member professionals posing ethical dilemmas – real problems they have faced.  The presenters will include Shari Morey of Batesville Casket Company, Inc.; Erik Johnson, APR, Fellow, from Borshoff; and David Shank, APR, Fellow, of Shank Public Relations Counselors.

The audience will be the ethics evaluators at each of your luncheon tables. Together, you and your colleagues will discuss the cases presented and create solutions to the problems posed. 

PR educators Debra Worley, Indiana State University; Ray Begovich, Franklin College; and Jim Bright, Indiana University, will facilitate the table discussions.

Continuing Education Academy: Seminar on Special Events and Event Management

Corporate groundbreakings. Social fundraising galas. Conventions. At some point in our careers, each of us has been or will be in charge of planning an event. However, the majority of practitioners receive no training in this field and rely on learning on the job. If there is one topic that is mentioned to the professional development team on a regular basis, this is it!

The goal of the first Continuing Education Academy seminar is to teach strategies and tactics for creating and managing events of all types and sizes successfully.

Public relations practitioners vs. Lawyers

January Luncheon: PR practitioners vs Lawyers

If you’ve practiced public relations in situations fraught with legal issues, you know how challenging it can be. If you haven’t, you need to be prepared. November Luncheon to Feature Popular Meet the Media Format

Join Hoosier PRSA on Wednesday, Nov. 12, for our next Meet the Media session, as we take this popular PRSA program into our monthly luncheon format. All of the traditional media bases are covered—print, radio and TV.

Susan Guyett, the Indianapolis Star, will shed insight into her popular "Talk of Our Town" column. Terri Stacy, WIBC-FM morning show co-host, will talk about scoring live remotes, in-studio interviews and the station's news gathering process. To make it a true media trifecta, WTHR-TV's news reporter, Lynsay Clutter, will chat about the assignment desk at Channel 13 and what she's looking for in a good story.
